The Physical Model Workshop

Why physical lime plaster, basswood, and cast bronze mockups remain at the absolute core of our spatial investigations in an era increasingly dominated by screen simulation.

In an architectural landscape increasingly dominated by hyper-realistic digital renderings and automated generative tools, physical model-making remains the beating philosophical heart of STONE & WARD. In our dedicated basement workshop in Clerkenwell, ideas are tested through direct physical contact with material and gravity.

Led by Partner Julian Vance and master craftsmen Maxime Dubois and Arthur Pendelton, the studio workshop produces hundreds of physical iterations for every commission. We cast in lime mortar, carra plaster, cast bronze, and locally salvaged timber, investigating how natural light interacts with volumetric mass and tactile texture.

Physical models expose truths that computer screens effortlessly conceal: the structural resistance of a joinery node, the physical weight of a cantilevered beam, and the subtle shadow gradation across a textured masonry surface. Scaling from 1:500 urban contextual blocks down to 1:1 tactile details, the process enforces absolute honesty in construction.

Clients and collaborators are invited directly into the workshop to handle plaster castings and test timber joints. This shared tactile experience fosters an intuitive, deeply collaborative design relationship long before foundation stones are laid on site.
