Timber & Daylight: Highgate
A deep-dive into the structural joinery, low-carbon glulam timber framing, and sculptural solar shafts designed for our recently completed residential pavilion in north London.

Set against the sloping topography of Highgate Woods, our recently completed woodland pavilion explores the quiet poetry of seasonal daylight, exposed timber tectonics, and contemplative living. The residence replaces an inefficient mid-century dwelling with a low-impact, carbon-sequestering structure that sits lightly upon the forest floor.
The house is organized beneath a floating glulam roof canopy, punctuated by narrow clerestory skylights that capture shifting forest canopies throughout the day. Floor-to-ceiling slimline timber glazing dissolves the boundary between domestic interior and ancient oak woodlands, creating an immersive sensory dialogue with nature.
Thermal comfort is achieved through passive solar orientation, heavy lime-rendered thermal mass walls, and a continuous ground-source heat pump system integrated into a honed basalt slab floor. Custom joinery in English ash and darkened bronze handles was fabricated in our Clerkenwell craft workshop.
By prioritizing natural acoustic dampening, diffuse illumination, and natural woodland vistas, the Highgate residence demonstrates that contemporary architecture can provide a sanctuary of deep restorative quiet within Greater London.
